SADD pack brings hope
OAMARU MAIL Sept. 2008: WAITAKI Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) chairperson Jess Russell hopes a new party safe initiative will keep police in the loop when it comes to after-school socialising.
Jess, 17, said the No Regrets Safe Party Pack, launched earlier this week, was developed to provide parents and young people with information that will encourage them to organise and enjoy a trouble-free party.
“I hope it will be a success… People who are having a party can get the pack from the police station,” she said.
The Waitaki Girls’ High School Year 13 boarder was appointed chair of the local SADD branch at the beginning of the year, but she has been a member of the group for more than three years.
She said Waitaki community safety officer Alison Banks approached SADD members to get their views on the pack.
“We all gave our opinions because (Mrs Banks) wanted opinions about the pack from people our age,” Jess said.
“It’s an excellent opportunity to be involved not only in drink driving initiatives but safety issues relating to alcohol and youth.” The pack contains resources for parents and students planning a party.
It includes safe practices for dealing with gatecrashers and information about underage drinking laws.
The pack contains information on how to be a responsible host if planning a party as well as a party registration form, which tells the police that an event is to be held.
