Purpose of the Youth Council The Youth Council is a group of representitives from the district's high schools and training institutions. They meet monthly to discuss issues that are relevant to the young people of the area. Their aims are to act as a conduit for young people to inform Council of a youth perspective and to enhance a positive profile of young people in the community. Each Youth Coucil meeting is attended by an adult Councillor who reports back to full Council.
Youth Council Meetings Meetings are held on Wednesdays, and run from 4:00pm.

Each Youth Council meeting begins with a public forum. We would encourage young people to present any ideas or issues at the public forum. To do this contact the Council.

Each of the high schools have a Youth Council member. Please contact them through your school if you have any issues or ideas for projects, or events.

Youth Council Projects and Events
Grain Store Gig To celebrate Youth Week in May the Youth Council hosted a youth event at the Grain Store in Oamaru's Historic Precinct. The event had two bands and was attended by 100 people.

Aspiring Leaders Forum
Youth Council Chair Neill Ballantyne attended this forum at Parliament hosted by MPs and CEOs of major NZ corporations. Neill would encourage any young people who have a leadership role and are interested in honing their skills to visit the web site:

The Youth Council sponsored Jo Scott from Waitaki Girls High School to attend this forum in Auckland.

Mental Health Awareness Week
The Youth Council painted the town ORANGE by subsidising sales of orange T Shirts to highlight the mental health issues. As you can see from the image below one in five New Zealanders are affected by poor mental health in their lifetime.
The Youth Council organised speakers, who had experienced mental illness, to talk in schools to answer students questions.
